I had a burger here once that was super delicious, but that's not the purpose of this review. Sanders has the formal bar with the most vast selection I have found in the region. I was able to order all of my obscure favorite liquors as well as get great recommendations for new ones. The bar service is top notch. From good bourbons to fancy tequilas, amazing absinthe, and fine crafted mix drinks, Sanders is supreme.

I have eaten here several times and feel very conflicted with my rating. If reviews were based on ambiance alone, I would have no problem giving it four or five. In the land of crappy chain restaurants with no real fine dining, this place is a refuge. However, the food is suffering so much that I can't give it more than a tenuous three stars. Numerous times here I have had to send entrees back because they were under-prepared. That and then there all the host of small failings that add up...details like dull salads, hard, old bread, etc. that make it clear that this place isn't trying anymore. Everyone talks about how great this place was "back in the day," and it is coasting on that reputation with a clientele that skews older. This is not the 1980s anymore and Grand Forks is not as culinarily isolated from the rest of the world. Anyone can pack up and go eat much better, more worldly food in Minneapolis. Even Fargo, which is far from Foodie Central, has several good restaurants these days that blow Sanders out of the water in both menu offerings and quality of preparation. If you airlifted Sanders, as is, to downtown Fargo in 2014 and made it compete with the local offerings there, it would dry up and blow away like a tumbleweed within six months. The kitchen is phoning it in, but they also don't seem to be given the best raw materials to make food with. The menu has been pared back to "old favorites," which would be fine if they prepared them well with good materials. As is, it is impossible to justify the prices for much of the tepid entrees they turn out. The pasta, while billed as homemade, is never inspiring. The beef or lamb could be good if the kitchen staff would follow orders re: cooking. The menu never changes other than a weekly entree special which is always the same three options of (1) some kind of fish (2) some kind of pasta, and (3) some poultry or meat, with little real variation. The creative spark is gone from this place. The "small plates" offerings are one bright spot, probably because they are relatively simple and hard to mess up. The place is going to be sold and move to a new, larger location in downtown GF sometime in early 2015. Hopefully the new owner is not a slave to the "old way" and tries to be innovative.

What a terrible meal!! Service was ridiculously slow from start to finish, food was boring at best and ludicrously overpriced, atmosphere was stuffy and pretentious with more than a hint of upper middle-class snobbishness. If you can boil rice and put a steak in a broiler, make your dinner at home and save yourself the money. Everyone in my party left frustrated and feeling ripped off. I came to Sanders under the impression that this was one of the nicest restaurants in town, and left with the understanding that "nice" means "expensive" rather than, you know, good.

Do to its proximity to where I live, I go here occasionally. If you would like to eat the same day you ordered the food, you better go somewhere else. The food is sometimes creative, rarely that exciting, and always slow. And besides the daily specials, I don't think the menu has changed in a decade. I have had fine dining ordeals that take 3+hrs, but they are usually 5 courses with a few amuse-vouches thrown in for good measure. Here 3 hrs will get you a salad and an entree, and maybe 4 drink refills. Give it another 20+minutes if you want dessert. Speaking of the desserts, the only thing that I have found to be consistently good here is the cheesecake. They have one daily cheesecake, and as long as there is not an ingredient that you despise, it is probably your best bet.

Old school restaurant in downtown GF. Great, retro atmosphere. Tasty cocktails. Respectable steaks and chops. Salad didn't seem very fresh, but hey, it's the prairie. I give this 3 stars for the setting and the solid service, but the food is a 2, and it's mighty pricey for what you're eating.

I decided to give Sanders a try this past Thursday; it was my last night in Grand Forks (I was in town for work training), and I've been wanting to try this place for some time, but it's never worked out until now. I walked in and was greated immediately by their host. I decided to sit at the bar so I could watch the Thursday Night Game. The main bartender (I forget his name) was very friendly, and probably knew the menu specials better than the servers. I went with the Coconut-Curry Chicken; amazing! Dessert consisted of Creme Caramel (think creme brulee, but just the custard part), and a couple of after-dinner drinks. As I was enjoying the first bite of my dessert, an older gentleman sat next to me and commended me on my choice, saying it was his favorite. I've been in enough restaurants and bars to know when the owner/manager is working the floor, so I introduced myself to Kim (the owner), and we have a pleasant conversation about the game, the restaurant's 30+ year history, etc. Overall, I really enjoyed Sanders, and I would definitely recommend it for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, etc.).

If you're just coming for drinks 4 stars, they make a pretty wicked mixed drinks and decent martinis. Food 2 stars. For being somewhere that is supposed to be upscale, the food is lackluster at best. I have a hard time paying fine dining prices for something I can make better at home, and it's not like a I'm a chef. If the prices were lower I might be inclined to rate the food higher, but here you pay more than what you get. Service 3. Hit or miss, sometimes I've had really good servers. Other times... not so much. I really want to like this place more considering it's touted as "the best place in town" but honestly, I will take people that visit me (if I can get anyone to visit me while I'm here) to other places that I think are better annnnnd cheaper (yes I will even try to save people money when I'm not paying).

We gave Sanders one last try last night, and they failed again. We dropped $200 on a dinner that nobody wanted to eat. The Caesar salad was essentially inedible, the ravioli special was anything but special, the filet (ordered medium) was dry, chewy, and tasteless. Our waiter repeatedly ignored the empty glasses on the table - the only thing that was really being consumed. The rumor is that Sanders used to be the best restaurant in town. I can only imagine that was years ago. I have no idea what happened to this place, but I won't be back to try it again.

Sanders has definitely slipped recently. My favorite meal there has always been the salmon. My last two visits have been disappointments however. I again ordered salmon a few months ago and am still not quite sure what I was served. We were seated at the front and served by the bartender who never once even smiled. When he brought my plate I politely asked what it was since it was a grey color and not at all pink like their salmon has always been. He did not respond, just stared into space looking annoyed. I took a few bites but whatever it was proved to be very tough, almost rubbery. The garlic mashed potatoes were fine. Two weeks ago, I decided to give the salmon another try. It arrived looking like actual salmon, pink & slightly seared. Usually I rave about Sander's perfect, flaky salmon. This time it was raw on the inside, mushy rather than flaky and barely warm. One of my guests was quite sensitive to any complaints while dining out so I did not complain which is totally my responsibility. For an entree (not including the $8.50 salad) costing $31.00, it proved to be a very sad meal and likely my last at Sanders. The pretentiousness of some of the servers, the lack of meal quality along with the unjustifiably high prices at Sanders, make many of the other GF/EGF downtown restaurants the ones I will choose to patronize.

Yeah, it's pretty pricy especially for grand forks. But they always deliver. I haven't had a bad meal here yet. I always go when I am in town. They have great salad/dinner specials, the fish is well executed and the duck is simply amazing (but do note they only have so many a night so ask or reserve your duck ahead of time.). The service has always been terrific. I have trouble finding fault with this place. I am lucky it isn't in my home town or I would be that much poorer.

I really enjoyed this meal. I had a sesame and pepper corn crusted rare marlin app, that was very good, although I would have liked it to have a little more zing. The Citrus based sauce it was in was quite nice and didn't kill the flavor of the fish. Main Course, Mid Rare Ribeye with Bearnaise sauce, sides of garlic mash and Asparagus. What can I say, it rocked. The desserts mostly have alcohol in them, so I had a latte. Very nice special occasion place or if you have a lot of money, you can go there daily.

I lived in Grand Forks until 1988 but have not been back since. Looking at some comments here, I thought I'd confirm that this was hands-down the best restaurant in town at the time, and in fact I regard it as having been one of the better restaurants that I have eaten at anywhere (and I've eaten all over America and Europe). So why write something now? Just to confirm that, indeed, if this place is not tops, it definitely isn't what it once was. At its inception, anyway, it was supposedly run by a highly trained French chef who found him- or herself in Grand Forks due to some spousal job move. Not sure if I can submit a review without checking stars, because i really cannot rate the place today. I will put in five stars in case it's required.

After hearing people rave about Sanders, I finally went to give it a try-I was let down. Not sure if it's not my style, but when I first stepped in the door there was no "wow" factor for me-which is something I would expect from a more "upscale" restaurant. I decided to order the ribs they offered that day, starting out with a Caesar Salad. I have to agree with an earlier post saying it was way too greasy..and really wasn't a fan of the flavor. The bread they brought out was nothing special.. When the ribs came out, they were ok..but nothing I couldn't make myself or get for a lot cheaper at Texas Roadhouse or Applebee's. A baked potato also came with my meal, and they decided to pretty much toss enough butter for 6 potatoes onto my one-Not sure if they were trying to make a neat presentation. One thing I did like-they offer pies/cakes made fresh at Sanders! I didn't order any, but after the $100 spent for 3 people to dine, we didn't feel like adding on dessert. The food was overall overpriced. I'm nowhere near a connoisseur of "fine dining", so maybe I just don't appreciate and see Sanders true potential as much as some do. I definitely don't plan on going here again; would way rather spend my money at Little Bangkok just down the road! (That place gave me delicious food, great service, and the wow factor I expect from a restaurant of this sort.)

Always welcome and never disappointed with the food or the drinks...my favorite place in Grand Forks.

Simply the best there is in the Grand Forks dining scene, Sanders is a place where impeccable service meets high quality, tasty food. Prices for dinner can be high for Grand Forks, but you will get what you pay for quality-wise. The hidden jewell behind the operation is the late night menu and their new late night specials. When my favorite dish (the BBQ Prime Rib sandwich) is on special, I can get out of the restaurant with three courses (a Wedge Salad to start and Chocolate Decadence for desert) in addition to several alcoholic drinks for $30 or less. That is cheaper than most of the other popular places out there, yet people in the city still flock elsewhere. Late night specials include 1/2 price on the following: Burgers on Tuesdays Lavosh on Wednesdays BBQ Prime Rib sandwiches on Thursdays and a variety of appetizers on Fridays and Saturdays. With these new specials, you honestly can't go wrong.

This is supposed to be the best restaurant in Grand Forks, but it falls short. There are some great aspects to the place like the ambiance, and the entrees but where it falls short is the sides and price. The entrees are great but the side dishes are uninspired and seem to cheapen the whole experience. If you want a cheaper option go for the late night menu it is awesome.

Read all the reviews and I was so excited to go to. Here is my experience. I went to Sanders a couple of days ago and I am giving the place 1 star. (1) Bread was Cold cold cold. C'mon first impressions (2) Ceasar salad - so greasy. Might as well give me bottle of oil. (3) Ordered the Calamari... All I have to say is DONDE ESTA MY CALAMARI??? pieces were small as hell. they from a frozen bag where you buy at Target or somewhere. and breading was overloaded. (4) Filet Mignon - dry as hell. (5) Prime Rib- was alright. (6) New Castle Beer - flat as hell...I switched to bottled beers SO FUNNY. 2 people asked me whether I was Noneya on Yelp. SMALL TOWN NORTH DAKOTA!!!!!! Good thing no one can hunt me down in GF. I am long gone!

We had a nice visit to Sanders on our trip to Grand Forks. We really enjoyed the pate and shrimp cocktail. I loved my Bellini-Tini but my husband didn't care for the mojito. I had a very nice pear salad with gorgonzola and an orange vinaigrette (I believe), but this is not a regular offering. It was one of the many specials of the evening, of which our server was incredibly knowledgeable. The Prime Rib was excellent. I also liked their version of creme brûlée (although it tasted more like flan because they do not caramelize it). The dessert special was lemon cheesecake and that was amazing. The service was fantastic. The biggest downside was that we were seated in the bar area in a booth that was a little awkward to get in and out of. For this nice of a restaurant, I would have expected a little better table setting. The other couple dining with us were also upset because they served our wine in the wrong type of glass. ;) oops! Oh well!

A nice "business casual" ambiance, Sanders seemed like a nice place to have a nicer meal in town without going off the proverbial deep end with price. I started with a caesar salad, which had a terrific, authentic, and obviously homemade dressing and fresh croutons. The Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly, but I found the green peppercorn sauce to be a bit less potent than I would have liked. The service was very attentive and prompt; I would have rated them higher had the menu been a bit more enticing.

Ah, good evening sir Would you like to start with wine Or some kick-ass food (One of the few real 'restaurants' in town... Although Sanders is a bit pricy (by local standards), the food is actually worth it, for the most part. They usually have some creative specials, and they serve sushi on Thursday evenings. Try their late-night menu (after 9pm) for some tasty bar-food fare. Highly recommended.)

So I have to admit the food here was a pleasant surprise and I definitely would have given them a higher rating had they not run out of the two dishes I wanted, as well as, this beer I wanted to try. Crazy huh, how do you run out of beer. In any case, though the ambiance is pretty nice and the staff does a great job of presenting the dishes. Also surprisingly the seafood platter was really fresh and tasty and the pear salad was great. Anyway, if you're in town this place is definitely worth stopping by as it was the ONLY place that came up for Yelp in this town. As a separate note, I believe this place is actually called Sanders 1907.

I must say, I wonder what has happened to Sanders 1907, judging by the reviews. I lived in GF from 1987-1991 and Sanders was our favorite "treat ourselves" restaurant. Back in the day, Tuesdays-Thursday was international cuisine special night where Tues was Italian, Wed was French, and Thurs was German. The chef would decide what he wanted to offer based on what was available when he went shopping. I would call down on a Thursday and ask what was planned, and reserve two. More than once, we would receive this stunning meal and the table next to us would receive an equally nice, but completely different offering. When they would ask the waitress, she would tell them that we had called in earlier in the day and had two specials held back for us, and they had sold out. And it was $7.50 for the meal (ok, it WAS 25 years ago). Looked at their website, looks like international night is a thing of the past. But it remains a favorite memory for me and my wife.

Sanders is a place you love to wry your eye at. Just like the river across the street, water moves to the lowest spot, and the same you could say about the money in Grand Forks finding it's way to Sanders. Impersonal at times, the wait-staff is highly trained and very quick to accommodate. The one thing they wont do is carry you out the door and place you in the car, because you'll feel like you need this kind of service after eating more than your fair share of butter. True, Sanders does have great tasting food, but the butter just reminds me of the role MSG plays in Chinese food. As for draft beer, their selection squeaks by at a lowly selection of three. 1) Something trendy: Heineken, 2) Something that sells: Blue Moon, and 3) Something exotic*: Summit EPA (or if you're lucky, IPA). If you'd like to experience a drunken, high-class evening downtown I suggest Bombay Sapphire Gimlets -- straight up, alternated with cups of coffee (which is extraordinary good; they use eggshells in the grind to remove bitterness). Please note: Sanders receives 5-stars because of it's relativeness. It's a wonderful place for the location, but it may need to shed a few skins, grow another arm, and lose a tail to survive in a larger city. *Sarcasm

On my many travels I insist on exploring "the Best" dining in the area; Zagat is my "Food Bible" . . . based on years of experience it's hard to find ANY location as consistently delightful as Sanders! The servers remember you after one visit, the wine list and their suggestions are "right on" . . . .we always ask: "Would you return?" . . . a resounding "YES!" for Sanders, and proprieter Kim H ! Kudos!!

It's the only game in town for casual fine dining, but Sanders holds its own on a wider scale as well thanks to Kim Holmes's impeccable taste (and his tendency to steal the best cooks in town from other restaurants). He also spares no expense in having fresh fish flown in regularly, making this one of the few places to get reliably good seafood in the most landlocked state in the country.

My husband and I were in Grand Forks to drop off our son at UND. We made reservations for Friday night at Sanders 1907. We enjoyed our meal so much, we returned on Saturday. First, I had the Ceasar Salad. This may not appeal to everyone, but I loved it!! It had little bits of anchovy clinging to the crisp Romaine and lots of fresh grated parmesan. Fishy Delicious!! My husband had the Soup Special a Japanese Clam Chowder. Excellent. We both started off with these same dishes when we came in the next night. I had Walleye. Beautifully pan seared. Big 'ole piece of fish. You would have thought we were in Texas where everything is Big! My husband had a Maryland Blue Crab Ravioli and raved about it. On Saturday night I had Carbonara done peasant style with Olive Oil instead of cream. Very nice, but I could not finish it because the portion was generous and because I had their Chicken Liver Pate before my salad. They served their Pate with some Boursin cheese, olives and crackers. I could do without the cheese, but managed to eat every morsel of the pate. My husband ate the Seafood Trio?, Sampler? Extraordinaire? He liked it a lot! Fish, shrimp, lobster, scallops, and more. He couldn't finish it either. On Friday nighty, we had the Pecan Torte with ice cream and carmel sauce. It was wonderful to enjoy a dessert that wasn't cloyingly sweet! Our son did not eat with us, but would have suggested they warm up the bread. I didn't mind it cool... it kept me from overeating it!! Our waiters were great (Kevin and Joe). They were informative and friendly. We asked a lot of questions since we were new to GF. I am looking forward to our next stop in Grand Forks because we have a place to eat that is so much more than college food!
